The organisers of the Inaugural ‘Bogan Day Out’ festival are happy to report that the day was a resounding success.
A big crowd of about 550 people went through the gates and took part in a wide variety of activities and displays on offer that the hardworking but enthusiastic committee had planned for the day.
With great music playing all day, the many activities gave visitors to the Riverside Caravan Park something to do and see every hour.
Water-skiing and wakeboard and barefoot displays had people crowding on the river banks to see the great stunts and skills on show. With the breeze blowing off the river it was a popular spot to spend the day.
Nick Muldoon is the newly crowned winner of the ‘Best Bogan’ competition with Dave Scott runner- up, while in the ‘Mini Bogan’ competition Emma Beetson came up trumps with Tegan Douglas runner-up.
The winners of the hotly contested egg throwing competition - with a record 42 teams of two being entered - were Marilyn Neill and Merrill Peterson who promptly broadcast their victory all around the world via text messaging.
The hotly contested ‘Business House Challenge’ was won by the Hairy Innovators - a team of four from Jazz Em Up hair salon and Nyngan Innovations - with Steph, Janelle, Ashley and Tania crowned after a hard-fought slog from a determined group of young teachers to gain the coveted plaque.
The tug-of-war was popular and attracted kids of all sizes to have a go at getting the rope across the line.
The ‘Best Bogan Ute’ was won by Anna Carter with runner-up Nick Muldoon, while the ‘Best Street Ute’ went to Ed Griffith with runner-up Corin Ah See.
The whip cracking was a feature of the day. The under-14 years title went to Anna Carter who was closely followed by Ridge Bennett, with Jessica Carter taking out the over-16 years title with great style, cracking not just one but two whips at a time.
The golf buggy races were great
fun and showed much driver skill and style, with the final going to
Aaron Bennett with Chicky Parry coming in a close second and Ridge Bennett third.
Many thanks must go to the musicians who entertained all day, particularly Anthony Gemmell who provided the equipment for all the other artists and gave so freely of his time.
Thanks and appreciation to Nyngan Public School, Nyngan Preschool and Senior Rugby League Club who provided food and drink for the day.
Along with the ice cream man and the lollie stall, everyone ate well.
Lots of ‘Proud to be Bogan’ merchandise was sold and no doubt there will be a few Bogan T-shirts floating around.
Many thanks also to the wonderful people who volunteered to drive the courtesy bus for those wishing to get safely in and out of town, and a big thanks to Jack and Dione Carter for allowing the use of the Riverside Caravan Park to hold the festival. They and their workers put in many hours getting it set up to look great for the day.
A very successful market day was held prior to the commencement of the festival in the main street and was also organised by the Bogan Day Out Committee, particularly Wendy Clissold.
Thank you to the local businesses who took part by displaying goods outside their stores or ran sale tables or specials as a way of participating in the market day.
The committee wishes to thank all the wonderful sponsors and local business houses who contributed to the success of the day, particularly Mike Brady, general manager
Ray Donald and Bogan Shire Council staff who were our biggest
supporters.
To all those people who came along to share in the day, thank you.
The Bogan Community Tourism and Business Committee is hoping that the ‘Bogan Day Out’ will become a permanent fixture on the Nyngan calendar and has already booked musicians for next year when the festival will be held on Saturday September 25.
So keep this date free - and remember to be “Proud to be a Bogan”.
