Choirs give kids a chance

07 Oct, 2009 03:20 PM
Now in its fourth year, and growing in size and geographic reach, Moorambilla Voices provides four unique opportunities for the musically-gifted young people of the region - the girls choir, the girls choir (primary school children), the MAXed Out Company for high school youth and the touring choir selected from the boys and girls choirs to undertake tours such as to the Sydney Opera House in November 2008.

Gifted children represent their towns from within 12 shires around Coonamble, working with musical leaders in their field to create new music for performance at the festival and beyond.

Children are chosen on the following qualities: innate vocal aptitude, ability to work co-operatively with others, innovative thinking and creative problem solving and a desire to challenge themselves.

More than 2000 children took part in skills development workshops with artistic director Michelle Leonard in 2009.

From these workshops Michelle personally selects the children who will take part in the year’s program of workshops, residency camps and performances at the Moorambilla Festival.

This year the audience experienced a lantern parade (in all white) whose breathtaking beauty never ceases to amaze, concerts and workshops in visual and musical art forms with leaders of the highest calibre, not to mention the genuine warmth of the Coonamble welcome and the laughter and creative gifts of our region’s children. Come on we dare you to sing.
