The Cross of Mary MacKillop was constructed by the Knights of the Southern Cross from floorboards from Mary’s school in Penola, South Australia which was Mary MacKillop’s first Australian school.
Representatives from the Knights of the Southern Cross have been travelling with the cross since Mary MacKillop’s Feast Day on August 8.
They have toured through Victoria, South Australia and are presently travelling around NSW and hope to visit each Australian state before the Canonisation of Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first saint, in Rome on October 17, 2010.
Parishioners, along with students from St Joseph’s School, were delighted to welcome the MacKillop Cross to Nyngan on Thursday, September 2. Sr Petra, representing Mary MacKillop’s order of sisters, led the reception service in St Patrick’s Church accompanied by the beautiful singing of the students.
St Patrick’s Parish, Nyngan will have a Mass of Celebration at 11am on Sunday October 17 to coincide with the ceremony in Rome.
