Trip of a lifetime

03 Jun, 2009 03:04 PM
A group of people with disabilities has been taken on the trip of a lifetime.

The Drive 4 Life “Wheelies” trek stopped at Nyngan on Saturday with 12 Toyota 4WD vehicles taking the group on an outback experience.

The Nyngan stopover was the first night of the 16-day trek that will see the group travel on to Broken Hill, Arkaroola in the Flinders Ranges, up the Birdsville Track to Birdsville, the Simpson Desert and Poepple Corner, before returning to Sydney via Innamincka, Tibooburra, Bourke and another night in Nyngan.

Drive 4 Life is a non-profit group that works with Northcott Disability Services to give people an experience they may not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy.

High-level care needs, financial barriers and a lack of suitable vehicular travel can prevent some people from enjoying all that the Australian bush has to offer and Drive 4 Life strives to assist where it can as well as providing fundraising 4WD tours during the year. For the Nyngan stopover they were hosted by Khans Supa IGA to a reception and barbecue dinner that provided a welcome relief after a long day of driving.

Ralph Hasna who has bone dysplasia is excited to be a part of this trip and to visit Nyngan.

“I have never been to Nyngan or any of the other places we will be visiting along the way. This trip is an invaluable opportunity to appreciate the diversity of the Australian outback and to break stereotypes about disabilities,” he said.

Northcott Disability Services has been providing help to those who need it for 80 years and currently supports more than 6000 people with a broad range of disabilities and their families in NSW and the ACT. For more information on Northcott visit www.northcott.com.au

Drive 4 Life is a group of four-wheel-drive enthusiasts seeking to promote four-wheel-driving as a legitimate recreational activity. During the past four years Drive 4 Life’s fundraising activities have raised more than $200,000 which has been donated to Northcott.

Drive 4 Life values the support of IGA supermarkets, Toyota Australia, ARB 4WD Accessories and Cooper Tires. For information on Drive 4 Life and how you can attend its four-wheel drive trips visit www.drive4life.com.au
