Tritton Mines and Bogan Shire Council have joined a growing list of local businesses showing their support for the one in three people in Bogan Shire who will be directly affected by cancer.
Nyngan Relay For Life sponsorship co-ordinator Nicole Dowling says Tritton Mines has signed up as a $2000 Gold Sponsor and joins silver sponsors Nyngan Observer and bronze sponsors Outback Motor Inn, Khan’s IGA and Howells Service Station.
“Local businesses are called on to support so many worthwhile fundraising and community events so we’re especially pleased and thankful to our sponsors to date for getting behind what promises to be a fantastic community event that has the potential to change and save lives,” she said.
“So far we’ve got 22 teams registered, with Team Hope and Nyngan Uniting Church leading the fundraising with over $1700 and $1100 raised each.
“Relay For Life is a fundraising event, but we also want people to learn more about how Cancer Council uses the money we raise for them to support local people facing a cancer diagnosis and how we can all take steps to reduce our cancer risk.
“Another seven teams - The Innovators, St Joseph’s staff and friends, Nyngan Twinkle Toes, Bush Chooks, Mummy’s, Hubby’s and Bubby’s, In the Pink and Walk 4 Peter - have all raised over $400 so far, with five weeks still to go.”
Teams can register on line at www.relayforlife.org.au and search Nyngan. Each team is asked to raise about $1500. Nyngan Relay For Life is an 18-hour overnight event where teams try to keep a team member on the track throughout the event.
“Some people will walk tens of laps, some will only walk one or two, the message is that with cancer you can’t stop just because you’re a bit tired, or hot, or foot sore, so for 18 hours our teams won’t stop either.”
Carey Carter, Relay For Life committee member, captain of Team Hope and employee of Tritton Mines said Team Hope was made up of staff, friends and family and was thrilled with the fundraising support they’d received so far.
“We are very excited to be supporting the Relay and can’t wait for the big weekend,” said Ms Carter. “We are looking forward to getting into the festival atmosphere, and are planning to dress up our team and maybe even our tents. Relay For Life also provides a wonderful opportunity to remember those we have lost to cancer and it’s also an occasion to celebrate life and survivorship.”
