Minister for Education and Training Verity Firth has announced that every Government school in NSW would receive a grant of up to $14,000 to buy sporting equipment under the Premier’s Sporting Challenge.
“Under the Sports Equipment to Schools Grants, $7.5 million is available to schools this financial year,’’ she said.
“Last year’s allocations were hugely successful and we’re following a similar model this year, in which the majority of equipment will be bought in a range of kits tailored to suit various age groups and sporting categories.
“The department’s purchasing power means schools will be getting top quality equipment combined with outstanding value for money.
“They will also have the option of buying individual sporting goods to suit specialised needs.
“The grants demonstrate our commitment to maintaining sport as a highly valued and important part of a school’s curriculum and a student’s personal development,” Ms Firth said.
“Physical fitness, teamwork and discipline are all essential to a student making the most of their opportunities at school, in and out of the classroom.
“This program supports all schools in helping their students achieve active and healthy lifestyles.”
The Premier’s Sporting Challenge is providing $50 million over four years to improve sport facilities and sports equipment levels at schools.
This year’s $7.5 million allocation averages nearly $3300 per school.
The available kits can include gym, field and court equipment for sports such as basketball, netball and football, or equipment for modified sports such as kanga cricket for primary students.
