Zone 4 honours for pony clubbers

30 Jul, 2009 11:21 AM
Nyngan Pony Club finished a very close second at the Zone 4 Jamboree, the biggest event on the pony club calendar, at Trangie on the weekend.

Twenty-two Nyngan riders participated in the two days of competition which included show riding, dressage, show jumping and sporting events.

In a repeat of last year the three Hoy girls - Lizzie, Annabelle and Victoria - topped the point score in their respective age divisions, showing just how competitive they are across all pony club disciplines.

Lizzie, Annabelle, Anna Carter and Ridge Bennett also won the trophy for the best four senior riders from the same club.

As usual the Nyngan club looked immaculate in the opening parade and finished in second place by just one point. The maroon, gold and white colours stood out and the horses all looked their best thanks to plenty of behind-the- scenes work.

As usual Nyngan was well prepared following two special practice days in the lead up to the competition and many riders put in personal best performances over the weekend.

About 140 riders from pony clubs across the zone participated at the jamboree, with some age groups having more than 30 riders in them.

The Nyngan riders were consistently among the best performers all weekend, starting with Lucy McLaughlin and Amy Motley who finished first and third in the led under-7 group and stretching to Lizzie Hoy who won the A grade showjumping, 2.1 dressage, almost all her show riding and plenty of the sporting.

The Nyngan teams of four were another highlight. Two junior teams were placed with Victoria Hoy, Grace Carter, Heidi Stokes and McKinley Codrington winning. Jack McLaughlin, Alex McLaughlin, Lauren Moody and Maddison Harley came third. One senior team also placed.

Other standout performances came from Ridge Bennett who finished third in a very competitive age group after some great sporting results, James Carter who finished fifth in his age group despite missing all his show riding classes, Georgia Salter who pulled off a fifth placing in the E grade showjumping, Jack and Alex Mclaughlin who won ribbons in just about every show riding class to finish in sixth and ninth spot out of 33 riders in their age group, Grace Carter who rode beautifully all weekend even achieving an unexpected win in the bareback riding and Mitchell Harley who challenged himself in the C grade showjumping ring.

Kate Cleaver had to borrow a horse at the last minute when hers was injured, and rode commendably. Heidi Stokes also worked hard all weekend and was rewarded with some great results, especially on the first day. Lauren Moody has really bonded with her pony Munchkins and did well all weekend, especially in the showjumping. George Bennett was consistent all weekend and showed how much his riding has developed in the short time he has been involved in pony club. Holly Stokes was the only rider in the under-7 group and finished fourth overall after some great runs in the sporting. Olivia Wass was in the picture all weekend on Rocket and did a beautiful dressage test. Grace Carter and Maddison Harley both had a successful debut in the D Grade showjumping with Grace scoring a second place. Will Stokes was fifth in his boy rider class and gave the sporting a great shot and Catherine Bolam showed the value of taking part and having fun.

The Nyngan riders were all great sports, offering congratulations and support where they were due. Team managers Mary Dutton and Louise Wass did a wonderful job over the two days and their efforts were greatly appreciated.

The pony club parents can all heave a huge sigh of relief now before the competition season revs up again!
