Keen netballers travel to Coonamble

03 Jun, 2009 04:40 PM
On Saturday Nyngan Netball Association travelled to Coonamble for its fourth game of netball for the year.

A bus, very kindly donated by Tritton Resources for the day, was well utilised with all of the Under 10’s and Under 16’s team, as well as a couple of the under 12’s and three parents including Mark Beetson in his role as bus driver, coach and father left Nyngan at 7am.

The Under 10’s were the first team to take the court at 9.30am. They were unfortunately tested by the Gilgandra Green team, who were quite a bit taller and a little bit older, but there were a few flashes of brilliance. New recruit Aimee Jones is proving to be quite an asset to the team and did not stop running for the entire game, managing to put herself between the ball and Gilgandra quite a few times.

The next team to take to the field was the under 12’s who arrived in two cars with Sharon Grimmond and Karen Hawley. They had a victory over Coolah with the girls showing a lot of promise and determination. They are coming together as a very good team. The shooters were having a very good day, with Brooke Carthew even surprising coach Karen Hawley with her prowess. It’s good to see that Karen now has a full team of girls to choose from, though it would be nice to see a little bit more parental support.

The Under 10’s then had to play a second game and went down to Coolah. Coach, Jackie Carthew had no voice left from the constant shouting from the sidelines but the girls unfortunately were not listening. A lot of silly mistakes saw the score blow out far more than it should. Little Alanah Ryan very ably assisted by bigger sister Tahleah and shot some outstanding goals and Ske Douglas had the game of her life in the last quarter, but silly passes and stepping saw the girls come away with their second loss for the day.

Luckily the big girls had a great win as well. With fantastic defence from the undefeatable team of Danna Collins and Chez Morrison in the first quarter saw the ball turned over. Constantly coupled with some fantastic shooting from Tayla Dunn and Britt Burt, the girls were a mile ahead in the first quarter. Second quarter continued in the same vein resulting in Nyngan scoring eight goals to Coolah’s one. With the Nyngan side so far in front, coach Mark decided to let the girls have some fun and Chez Morrison took a turn as shooter, I think Mark has some hidden talent in his team. The last quarter saw Amy Beetson having a go as shooter and managing to get a few through the hoop.

After going out on a win it was time to pile into cars and the bus and head for home. A big thanks to Cassie Healy for travelling to Coonamble and refereeing the entire day, it is much appreciated.

A reminder from our secretary Karen Hawley, that all money for netball skirts needs to be paid this week. As we are now past the third week of the competition all of the girls need to be in correct uniform or they will be unable to take the court. This means a black netball skirt and yellow shirt with no leggings or skins or long sleeve tops. A couple of games were pulled up on the weekend due to incorrect uniform, so the group is serious about this.

Also a reminder that we are selling 300 club tickets to be drawn on June 27. First prize is $800, 2nd prize is $250 and there will be five draws of $50. So see the netball girls to get a ticket.

The next game is June 13 and will be a home game, so we hope to see lots of local faces supporting the girls.
