Tigers win tight tussle with Cobar

25 Jun, 2009 09:26 AM
On Saturday Nyngan played host to archrivals Cobar in what was expected to be a tight struggle. The game lived up to that promise as once again these two sides fought it out for the full 80 minutes to give the big crowd on hand a real spectacle of rugby league. It doesn’t seem to matter where they are sitting on the table and what form they are in, when the Tigers play the Roosters, it all goes out the window and these two great rivals just go at it.

Nyngan gained the upper hand early through the work of their forward pack, once again led by Brad Besant. Derek Knight capitalised on good go forward and quick play the ball to catch the defence napping and score a try. Gerald Mackey also crashed over for his first for his new club and when Dean Black scored a long-range effort the Tigers found themselves with a handy lead. Not to be denied the Roosters hit back with a couple of tries of their own before half-time to give them some hope before the break.

The second half was another tense struggle as Nyngan kept applying pressure through a good kicking game from halfback James Neyland. Cobar would not crack though and through a combination of ball control and determination forged their way back into the game. Coach Peter Ford scored three tries for the game and almost got Cobar over the line. With the scores locked at 28-all and about six minutes to go, Cobar’s Steve Ford potted a field goal and things looked very grim for the home side.

As they say, cometh the hour, cometh the man, and the saviour for Nyngan came in the diminuitive form of Derek Knight. Once again off the back of some damaging runs from the forward pack, Decka was able to catch the defence out with a darting run from dummy half to crash over under the posts and record a memorable win for the Tigers 34-29.

Reserve grade also had a good win, recording their third win of the season in what was a close game for much of the time. Two quick tries early on from Nyngan were answered by two from Cobar late in the first half to see the two sides go to half time with nothing in it and the game to be won by either side.

The scorers were not troubled for much of the second half as the rivalry once again brought out the best in both teams. Nyngan broke through with some good backing up which led to a try to Cecil Hooper, and when the big No 10 scored from 50 metres out after side stepping three defenders, chipping over to regather and put the ball down under the posts (I only write what I’m told), Nyngan had the game in the bag. Another good try to Fred Hilt saw the end score 30-8 in favour of the Tigers.

This brought on the main event of the day, the bi-annual Old Boys game. The Nyngan side, led out by Mark Beetson and with names such as Robb, Matheson and Carter along with a number of visitors took on the Cobar Old Boys in an entertaining game of top-notch rugby league. The legs may be weak and the jumpers may be a little tighter than they used to be but the passion was still there as these old warhorses went into battle once again.

Bott was as damaging as ever as he broke the line at will, although when he did he was not really sure what to do next. Rodney Robb put on his usual display, showing the skill that made him part of the ‘79 premiership side. Although 30 winters have come and gone, along with most of his hair, the spark is still there. Cobar eventually ran out the winners on the day, but it is a two-game series with the aggregate score deciding the winner. The next game in Cobar should be a beauty.

Our under 18s started their game well and at half-time were locked at 8- all with a well-drilled Cobar side. Tries to Brent Williams and Jeremy Whaley saw the boys right in the mix. The second half seemed to get away from them a bit as Cobar got going, but the boys showed that they can compete with the best of them when they play the football that they are capable of playing. The final score was 32-8 in a game that they can take lessons away from.

A big thank you to all who supported our jumper and player auction after the game. These were a great success and a real boost for the club. It was great to see the traditional strip worn by the first grade side, especially the Nyngan Auto Bodies logo on the front, as it was for so many years. Graham Furze has been a tremendous supporter of our club for a long period of time and his support again for this occasion made it all the more special, thank you Graham.

Thanks also to the committee for their work in organising the night and to Brad and Tammy for a great night at the Overlander. Our next game is against Dubbo Macquarie in Dubbo on Sunday the 28th. We would like to see all our supporters at Apex Oval to watch the Tigers take on the reigning premiers.
