With the assistance of Nyngan Museum volunteers, Bogan Shire Council established a new Visitor Information Centre (VIC) at the old Nyngan railway station building in March 2013, moving the main entrance of the museum to its current position in the old waiting room which also doubles as a VIC.

“Having a VIC is important for Bogan Shire as, by providing information to them, we hope to encourage visitors to stay longer to experience what our shire has to offer, spend more money locally and visit us again,” Bogan Shire Council general manager Derek Francis said.
“Now Council is keen to gain official accreditation for the VIC which demonstrates to the travelling public that we meet the recognised industry standards for the centre and allows us to use the trademark italicised yellow “i” on signage on the highway and in the main street to direct people to the VIC.”
The Nyngan Museum volunteers provide a wonderful service to visitors looking for information in addition to their museum responsibilities but, in working towards accreditation, we have to expand our hours of operation and need specialised VIC volunteers to work with Council’s Community Development officer Donna Pumpa on the counter at the VIC.
“It’s really important that visitors get the right information when they visit us,” Ms Pumpa said.
“They often need to know whether certain routes through the shire are suitable for their vehicles and how to get to sites of local interest or significance.
“There are many people in our community who have a wealth of local knowledge and experience that can make a real contribution by volunteering for the VIC - even if it’s an hour or two a week.”
In addition to calling for
volunteers, Council has decided to employ someone part-time to cover weekends, as one of the requirements for accreditation is that the VIC opens on Saturday and Sunday.
Recruitment for this position will take place during November.
