On Saturday March 8, you may have heard the sound of ‘Howzat’ ringing throughout Nyngan with wickets flying all over the place during the morning.
Coop and Dane (our fantastic volunteers) had organised the Milo players into teams and the big turnout of parents was treated to a quality match of fast bowling, great catching and unstoppable batting from the cricketers.
Everyone on the day received a trophy and special mention went to Ashton Deebank (Most Improved), Bradley Fitzalan (Encouragement) and Alex Palmer (Encouragement). A big thanks to all who helped with volunteering and we hope to see you all again next year.
The juniors played two games and the play-off for third place was between Hamish and Keegan’s team.
It’s amazing what pressure can do to a game.
Hamish’s team never recovered from the early wickets of their chief batsmen Hamish, Jacob and Kaleb.
Liam Wherritt (2/6) and Jordan Rufus (2/5) were swinging the ball a mile and were almost unplayable. Hamish’s team was kept to a small total of 32.
Keegan’s team then batted and after a few quick wickets it was ‘game on’.
However, Cooper Ryan steadied the ship and they made the total in eight overs. Third place was secured by Keegan’s mighty team.
The grand final (first v second) pitted Isaac’s warriors against Jak’s juggernauts on the turf wicket next door.
Once again the game had it all. Jak and Tim looked to settle and build a big partnership which they’d been doing all year but a fantastic piece of fielding by Col Rob Piper caught Tim short of his crease for a runout.
Then in comes the swinging Mitch Casey (he knows no other way) but it was Jak to go first to a fantastic yorker by Cale who sent his bails to Wales. Mitch went cheaply as did Pugsy and it was 4/20.
Isaac’s team was cheering while Jak’s team was sitting under the trees in total disarray. However, the eventual man-of-the-match Bill Sheather (25) stepped up on the day along with Max Hoare (14) to see the team post a respectable 76.
All year Isaac was seen by the opposition as the danger man and the grand final was no different.
“Let’s get him early” was the call from captain Jak. It wasn’t to be as Isaac batted with a sensible head. However around him Col (3), Cale (4) and Kyle H (0) all fell cheaply to some steady bowling. Isaac needed someone to stay out there with him and it looked like Naite would be the one again to be the anchor. Surprisingly, though, out of the blue, Isaac fell for 26 to an unlucky shot that came off his body and trickled onto the stumps.
It was left to Tim and Max to close out the game with some fine bowling. Naite and Tait tried valiantly to pick up the run rate with some excellent shots but in the end they fell short with a team total of 60 runs. Jak’s team were grand final winners for 2013/14.
The presentation was held straight after and congratulations to the following: Isaac Dutschke Best and Fairest - Batting, Terrance Ryan - bowling, Tim Walsh - fielding, Hamish McLaren - Most Improved and Encouragement awards to Mel Bodycott, Naite Holmes, Max Hoare, Reuben Stapleton.
A huge thanks to Ash Dunn, Pete Holmes, Richard Hoare and Kingsley Hunt for their weekly support and to all the players for their enthusiasm and dedication to turning up each week.
Finally, probably the best news of all. The Pink Stumps Day was washed out the previous week but we still managed to have fun on the grand final day by wearing pink and fundraising on the day.
The Nyngan Junior Cricket Club raised $1718 with some very generous sponsorship from the Nyngan community, Bogan Shire Council and Nyngan Junior Cricket Club.
See you all next year, Mick Walsh
