It was a one-sided affair from the starting whistle with the Bulls stampeding to the try line early in the first half, only to be denied their first points by a forward pass 10 metres out.
Nonetheless the Bulls quickly regathered and put Simon Bell through a gap for the first try of the game, easily converted by Matt Sheather for a 7-0 lead.
A penalty against the Bulls gave the visitors their only scoring opportunity in the first half taking the score to 7-3, but soon after the restart Dom Kennedy made one of his trademark runs covering half the field for a try and a score of 14-3.
The Bulls continued to dominate when Jackson Williams-Hedges was shoulder charged on the way to the line.
The penalty kick led to a Nyngan scrum five metres out putting the Bulls in position for massive front rower Ryan Sambeth to cross the line for a try and an increased lead of 19-3.
The Brewarrina boys had a sniff of hope late in the first half when one of their wingers stole the ball and made a length-of-the-field sprint for a near certain try, only to be denied by the missile-like Jimmy Elias screaming in from the opposite wing to take out the Brumbie 10 metres short of his target, allowing the Bulls to regather and take back control of the game.
The second half continued much like the first, with Dom Kennedy scoring a second try despite some big shoulder charges from the Brumbies defenders bouncing Dom around like a pinball.
Craig Ticehurst made a length-of-the-field run for a try under the posts, extending the lead to 31-3.
Brewarrina managed to cross the line once, scoring a try late in the second half but the highlight of the game was a penalty against the Brumbies resulting in a scrum five metres out.
In a perfect example of set-piece play, the Bulls’ powerful forwards drove the defenders ever-backwards while captain Bubba Perry gracefully guided the ball with his feet in the back of the scrum until it crossed the white line, leaving only the formality of touching the ball with his hands to score the try.
With a lead of 38-10 the game was all but over. Nonetheless Jackson Williams-Hedges got the ball soon after the restart and made a 90 metre sprint for the line and a final score of 45-10 at the final whistle.
Special mention goes to the golden boot of Matt Sheather who was nailing his kicks from all over the paddock, boosting an already healthy scoreline.
The Western Plains Rugby Union competition has Coonamble on 41 points, Nyngan on 40 points, Warren on 31 points and Walgett on 26 points, followed by Bre, Bourke, Gular, and Cobar. While the Bulls are quite safely in a top two position this weekend’s away trip to Coonamble will surely be a preview of the grand final.
A win against the reigning premiers would be a great confidence boost going into the finals, or will the Bulls save their biggest surprise for last? This weekend’s game will be one to watch and well worth the trip to support the team.
