The Bogan Bulls travelled to Coonamble on Saturday for a ‘top of the table’ match between reigning premiers the Coonamble Rams and ‘heirs apparent’ the Bogan Bulls.
The Coonamble Rams have dominated the Western Plains competition for so long they expected an easy victory on home ground.
What they got was a big surprise. The Bulls tore into the Rams with such ferocity that the injury count was of some concern.
Both teams fought hard and each team ran in four tries. The Bulls converted two and the Rams converted one which should have ended with a Nyngan win, but the penalty count was seriously lopsided with 16 penalties in favour of Coonamble versus four for Nyngan.
The Rams capitalised on the last of their penalties with a three-point goal which was enough to give them a win with the final score 25-24.
While some claim the Rams had 16 players on the field that day (one carrying a whistle), the result sent ripples through the Western Plains with news that the Bulls took it to the reigning premiers in hostile territory and only missed the win due to a penalty.
Needless to say - the Bogan Bulls are seething and counting the days until the inevitable rematch in the finals.
Strategy and patience comes into play now as the Bulls take on two lower ranked teams during the next two weekends.
The Nyngan boys will need to rest some of their players due to dislocated shoulders, strained hamstrings, and twisted knees from the Coonamble trip when they travel to Cobar this weekend to play the Camels.
While the Bulls are favourites, the Camels are yet to post a win and will be looking to take advantage of a depleted Bulls’ team.
In Reserve Grade the Bulls were again unstoppable with a 29-7 victory to maintain their position at the top of the table.
Undoubtedly some of the Reserve Grade players will be called up to First Grade during the next few weeks to cover for the injury count, but fortunately none of the injuries are season-enders.
