In Dubbo, 50.3 per cent of blood donors are women, slightly higher than the 49.7 per cent who are men, such as Dane Sullivan and Adrian Payton who donated last week.

The Blood Service hope the statistics will prompt women to give blood more often and for more men to roll up their sleeves and donate.

Dubbo's highest female donor, Adorie Tink said she started donating blood when she became a nurse. She has since made 251 donations.

Ms Tink said she saw the need for blood donations in the community, especially because of the prevalence of cancer.

"It doesn't hurt, the staff are lovely and they have the best milkshakes in town.

"Just get in and do it. It doesn't hurt and you'll feel much better. It's an easy community service and so convenient."

Lynn Harris, who has also made more than 200 donations said she donates plasma every two weeks.

"I just don't understand why more people don't give blood. I support it wholeheartedly.

"You can help someone without much effort. It's very simple to do and it's quite rewarding," Ms Harris said.

She said her husband regularly donates, her children donate and she will soon be taking her granddaughter to the Blood Donor Centre to give blood for the first time.

One in three Australians will need blood or blood products in their lifetime, but currently only one in 30 donate.
