The launch of our new “people space library” was held last Thursday morning with a good gathering of locals, councillors, high school representatives, community members and guests, Mr Graham Smith (Chair of Public Libraries, NSW) and his wife Mrs Sharon Smith who travelled from Kurri Kurri, Ms Anne Doherty (NSW State Library Representative) Sydney, Mrs Sue Harvey, (who was the first Librarian of the Bogan Shire Library in 1971), Nevertire and Mrs Pam Kelly, (North Western Library Manager), Warren.
The Mayor of Bogan Shire Council Ray Donald, Anne Doherty - NSW State Library Representative, Councillor Graham Smith - Chair of Public Libraries NSW all spoke about the library.
I also took this opportunity to give a brief history of the library service in Nyngan.
Thankyou to everyone involved with our refurbishment, Yarrabin Outreach, Reach, Home Start, Nyngan Seniors Group, Barnados, Nyngan Home Care, community members Mrs Ruth Green, Mrs Ruth Reid, Mrs Sarah Weston and of course Bogan Shire Council.
Council’s civil works team rebuilt our restrooms, painted the interior and helped dismantle the old shelving and carted all our 170 boxed library resources into the supper room next door, and then helped bring everything back to restock the library.
Thank you also to my staff Maria March and Tammy Trothe for all their hard work and the Men’s Shed for painting our children’s chairs and book stand. It’s been a true community effort.
Mrs Sue Harvey spoke about her start with the Bogan Shire Library and helped cut the 75th Anniversary of Library Act 1939 cake. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful cream sponge cake which was made by Mrs Judy Stimpson.
The morning was a great way to officially recognise our new-look library and all the people involved to get to this point where we are enjoying a modern, well-equipped library with all the necessary needs for our community.
