There was a great roll-up of Garden Club members and guests (several new faces too) at the Nyngan RSL Club Bowlers Bar on Monday February 23. Close to 40 people came along for the AGM and first general meeting for 2015. The room was full of gardeners happily chatting away and catching up on news since the last meeting was held way back in November 2014.
Dawn Elder took the chair and declared all positions vacant. Nominations were called for and the 2015 committee is:
President - Norma Jeffery
Vice President - Dawn Elder
Secretary - Anna Corby
Treasurer - Mary Burley
Publicity Officer - Donna Pumpa with assistance from Di Donald
Open Gardens Australia – Open Gardens Australia closes after 27 years.
The Open Gardens Australia will complete its schedule for the 2014-15 season before ending operations in June 2015.
Open Gardens Australia (OGA) started in Victoria 27 years ago and has been behind the opening of almost 20,000 private gardens across Australia to the public. In its heyday more than 800 gardens opened annually.
My Open Garden, an online site, is now the place to discover Australia’s most inspiring private gardens to visit. Or open your own garden gates to the public for charity, for fun, or for profit. You can find and list open gardens, garden events and suppliers but there is a cost involved. You do have to register to be able to use the site www.myopengarden.com.au
Open Gardens in 2015 and possible Garden Club Trips:
Wildwood Garden at Bilpin - open to the public several weekends this year from March to June.
Sue Barnett’s garden at Hallidays Point near Forster - open May 2-3.
Floriade September 18-20
Nyngan Open Gardens - October 11
Narromine - October 18
Millthorpe October 31 -November 1
Christmas Markets were successful with a large crowd and a substantial donation was made to Angel Flight.
Heritage Park Bench Seat – a bench seat has been installed in Heritage Park but the Garden Club has not yet been invoiced for the cost. Members would like a plaque placed on the bench to tell people that it was donated by the Nyngan Garden Club.
Garden Produce - a suggestion was made that Garden Club members who have an excess of garden produce (fruit, vegetable) might consider selling their goods at the meetings with a small donation given to the Garden Club from the proceeds. The committee agreed it was a good idea.
Nyngan Museum – there are several potted plants along the platform and these are in dire need of some TLC i.e. (repotting, new pots and new soil). The committee will consult with the museum co-ordinator to organise what needs to be done and a suitable time. Consensus was that it would be good to have it finished before Anzac Day.
Home Care is celebrating 70 years of service and wrote to the Garden Club seeking permission for a guest speaker from Home Care to attend one of the meetings to inform the group of the services provided by Home Care. Home Care will be invited to attend the March meeting.
Anna Corby proudly announced that her pineapple plant actually has a pineapple on it. Something special to be able to grow a pineapple in our climate.
The raffle was drawn and the lucky winners this month were Faye Dewhurst and Ruth Williams.
The Trading Table was loaded with bulbs, magazines, seeds, plant cuttings and eggs which proved very popular.
The March meeting will be held at Kerry Wright’s at Springdale Park. Please don’t forget to bring your lunch, chair and hat.
A program listing the 2015 meeting dates and venues will be out soon.
