Marathon Health is a not-for-profit primary health care organisation that delivers health services and programs to regional and remote communities. In past years Marathon Health (known then as Western NSW Medicare Local) provided the Nyngan community with speech pathologist, Stacey Marshall, and partnered with Royal Far West to deliver the Come n See program; a speech, language and communication program delivered via online video conferencing.
Speech pathology services have now commenced at the preschool and the first referrals have been accepted.
Once referrals are accepted, children will be assessed by Sian Draffin, paediatric speech pathologist, then have individualised programs written and delivered fortnightly by Lizzy Lavender, Allied Health Assistant, and Leah McClelland. his service will play a significant part of a child’s health development with Ms Draffin saying that “accessing speech and language support at the right time is crucial to a child’s development’’. The preschool educators are excited to welcome such a service to the town.
Preschool director Chantelle Finlay said that “there is a very real need in the community for paediatric speech pathology services and for a long time our families have had to travel to Dubbo for assessments and therapy, it’s certainly a great service for the children, the families and the town’’.
Other services provided by Marathon Health in Nyngan include Wendy Nour, a monthly diabetes educator, dietitian Kendra Bow and primary health care nurse, Sarah Gordon. To find out more about these services, contact Marathon Health on 6826 5200 or visit the website: www.marathonhealth.com.au.
