Nyngan Baptist Fellowship and Chaplin Richard Milligan is organising the hall to be an asset to the Nyngan community.
“It started out that we were looking for a venue to run a youth group. We knew the hall was there, and it looked like a great place for what we were looking to do- so we started asking questions,” he said.
The land at the corner of Derrybong and Cannonbar Streets was originally set aside as Crown Reserve for Boy Scouts, but negotiations have led to the Nyngan Baptist Fellowship undertaking to become managers of the property.
The reserve has now been redefined in legislation to allow it to be used for ‘Community Purposes’.
“The guys from Crown Lands were really happy to see the land and hall being used again- it is such a shame for such a great community resource to just sit empty,” Mr Milligan said.
“What this means is that our church is now looking after this property and running it as a Community Hall. We will manage the reserve, do what we can to improve it, and make it available for the community to use.”
“It’s a great space, and we are excited to book it for our Friday night youth group, down the track an after school kids club, and we are also having our church gatherings at the hall on Sunday afternoons. But we want the community to know that if they have a group that would like a great space like this to use- we want to hear from them. Our job is to make it a good community space,” he concluded.
The hall is fairly basic, with bathroom facilities, a small kitchen, and some small rooms alongside the main hall. The church is in the process of upgrading the facility.
“We have dreams for all sorts of upgrades, but we are starting with the most urgent. We have had a major clean-up with volunteers from church, and fixed up a few of the problem areas to make it usable. But the next big job is to insulate and line the roof and put in some air-conditioning,” Mr Milligan said.
