Council adopted its 2016/2017 Budget and Operational Plan at last week’s meeting, with only one public submission considered after the statutory 28 day exhibition period. The Federal Government had withdrawn over $600,000 from the Roads to Recovery Program for the next financial year and transferred this amount to the following financial year. This mainly meant transferring 12kms of gravel resheeting and 2kms of bitumen reseals to the next financial year. At a meeting earlier this financial year, Council had resolved to shift the dump point from its current position in the Teamsters Rest Area Car Park, adjacent to the Big Bogan across the line to the Flood Memorial Car Park. $15,000 has been allocated in next year’s budget to locate it adjacent to the Mid-State Shearing Shed. We understand this may lead to a few vans just dumping their waste and not stopping, however its present location adjacent to the Big Bogan, Cobb&Co Shed and new Medical Centre was probably not in the best spot. One of our new town maps will be located in the Flood Memorial Car Park adjacent to the new dump point location and toilets.

The Duck Creek Races comes around again this week with well over 2000 visitors heading to our town for the event’s tenth anniversary. Hopefully the weather will fine up this week so the horse races can be part of the day, as the track is still pretty wet from all the recent rain. These events don’t just happen, and we acknowledge with appreciation the efforts of the dedicated committee that roll up their sleeves every year to ensure the event occurs. Thanks to them and the local Police who have co-operated with the Shire to ensure it is a safe event.
Councillors and staff enjoyed another delicious lunch prepared by the Hospitality Class at the Nyngan High School, and welcomed three visitors to our meeting. Sergeant Tony Wood gave us an update of local Police actions, and Mr John Thompson gave a presentation about the development of the Scandium Mine project at Miandetta. Jodi Kilmartin from Australian Unity Home Care Services spoke to us about the potential for her organisation to combine with Council to develop and fund seniors aged care accommodation.
