At Council’s June meeting, they unanimously voted in favour of the resolution “that council has a welcome to country or acknowledgement to country at all public events hosted by council...”
The motion was put in place due to the absence of a welcome to country at the Early Learning Centre opening last month. Chief executive officer of the Nyngan Local Aboriginal Land Council, Veneta Dutton wrote to council via the Early Learning Centre expressing her concern.
Subsequently the mayor, Cr Ray Donald, and general manager, Derek Francis, met with Ms Dutton and representatives from the Bogan Aboriginal Corporation where it was decided that a welcome or acknowledgement to country should occur at all events.
