Eleven years after hearing those awful words, Donna is preparing to give back to the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) through the Great Aussie Outback Trek 2017.
The five-day, 70 kilometre challenge will take Donna and her fellow trekkers through the ochre-coloured heart of Central Australia on the Larapinta Trail, all the while helping BCNA provide free programs, resources and support to Australians affected by breast cancer.
To qualify to participate, Donna needs to raise at least $2500 by July 29, 2017, ahead of the trek in August.
The trek will be Donna’s second in aid of BCNA. In 2015, ten years after her diagnosis and with no recurrence, she participated in the Breast Cancer Network Australia Pink Peru Challenge.
For Donna, that challenge was a wonderful way to celebrate her life and remember those who had died from breast cancer – including her cousin Anne.
It was way of challenging herself for “all those brave women in Bogan Shire who are still putting up a hell of a fight against this disease!”
It was also a way of giving back to an organisation that supported her through what was a tough time in her life and that of her family and friends.
BCNA is the peak national organisation for Australians affected by breast cancer, and consists of a network of more than 110,000 individual members and 300 Member Groups.
More than 90 per cent of members have had a diagnosis of breast cancer. The remaining members have had a personal experience with breast cancer through a family member or friend.
BCNA works to ensure that Australians affected by breast cancer receive the very best support, information, treatment and care appropriate to their individual needs.
BCNA is represented by the Pink Lady silhouette, symbolic of the focus on the women diagnosed with breast cancer and all those around her.
