The Western Local Health District and the local police have confirmed the door of the centre was broken on December 12 around 9pm to gain entry into the emergency department.
Local police have confirmed an intoxicated man damaged the door. They are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The hospital staff called 000 and activated emergency safety procedures following the damage to the door.
A Western Local Health District (LHD) spokesperson said the door has since been reinforced with stronger glass.
“Following the incident the Health District has replaced the broken with thicker safety glass and has fixed the broken door,” they said.
“The Health Service will also install video security cameras in the near future.” .
Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries says he is pleased about the increase in security.
“The safety of all staff and patients in our hospitals must be paramount.
“Nurses and doctors in rural towns already have a lot on their plate and shouldn’t have to worry about their safety as well,” he said.
“I’m currently discussing the issue with Western NSW LHD to work out a way forward.”
The LHD spokesperson has praised the staff on duty the night of December 12.
“Staff have been offered counselling and have been praised for their actions on the night,” the spokesperson said.
Local police from the Darling River Local Area Command, said the investigations of the incident are ongoing.
The LHD spokesperson said the staff are assisting police with their inquiries.
