A small dedicated committee, along with a generous lot of local sponsorship, ensured the annual Bogan River Carp Muster was a success. The river looked fresh after its wash through last year, and by mid-morning a good load of carp had already been collected in the ute. This event brings many visitors to Nyngan and the river is certainly healthier with lots of these ugly fish out of action.

It is disappointing to read the headlines and article for the front page of last week’s Nyngan Observer. In our small rural community naturally law and order issues and safety are of major concern, particularly at our hospital, with zero tolerance to any violence. It is good to hear there have been upgrades to security measures at the hospital, and it would appear that more are needed so staff feel very safe and secure. However, I do not believe the nursing staff at our hospital would feel their nursing care is not appreciated in our local community.
Quite often families extend appreciation to the doctors and nurses either in the local paper, or at the funeral services, after one of their family members has passed on at the hospital. Most of the comments in the article came from a union representative who does not live in Nyngan, and whilst some recent security incidents would have been fearful for staff in their workplace, I believe our community has a great respect for the work they do and that patients are fortunate and appreciative of the high standard of care at the MPS. Not everybody reads social media. The General Manager and myself have a meeting with representatives from the NSW Nurses Association today and no doubt these issues will be discussed.
Seniors Week is around again with a full week’s program planned during the week of the 6th March 2017. The Nyngan Senior Citizen of the Year will be announced at the morning tea on Thursday 9th March 2017 at the Town Hall. Nominations for Senior Citizen of the Year closed on Friday 3rd March 2017.
Council is updating its Community Strategic Plan and would welcome your input into what should be our priorities over the next decade, and what community issues and projects Council should endeavour to focus on and achieve. This community meeting will be held on Wednesday 1st March 2017 at 6pm at the Nyngan RSL Dining Room. I know many of you might think this is what you elected your Council to do, but the State Government instruct Council to have these meeting for community consultation. Planning for the future of Bogan Shire is something you can constructively help us with. It seems daylight saving is with us again for March. I twice contacted the new State Deputy Premier and Nationals Leader asking for it to be wound back, but with no reply. It seems that National Party politicians, despite the result of the Orange by-election, are not prepared as a block to take action as this issue would really represent the wishes of the majority of rural and regional people.
