Nyngan High School Vice Captain, Kasey Douglas, spoke about the importance of gratitude during her address during the Wreath Laying Ceremony on Tuesday, Anzac Day.
She highlighted how younger generations should not take Australian freedom for granted given the sacrifice made by Anzac Soilders, not much older than Miss Douglas herself, 100 years ago.
She asked children and adults alike to remember.
“Remember the bravery and sacrifice of those who have served our country during conflict and crisis,” she said.
“Acknowledge the losses and sacrifices of soldiers and their families. This is a day to acknowledge selflessness of all those who have laid down their lives for Australia so it can be a place of freedom for all.”
Miss Douglas said it is her role as a young adult in Nyngan to help explain to the younger generations why Anzac Day is so significant.
“As an individual I am here to explain to the younger generations why it is with gratitude we remember,” she said.
“We have enjoyed the benefits of peace and easy existence that is purchased through the sacrifices of so many lives. Few of us have had to risk everything or chanced our love ones to the dangers of war.
“But for the older generations remembering such thing is easier; war and death came far too frequently in there lives.”
Miss Douglas said she is grateful for the sacrifice made 100 years ago.
“I am here to remind this generation and future generations that happiness has a price, happiness is a product of freedom and freedom is a reward of courage. We should be grateful to those who have helped preserve our nation and way of life.”
