Forty-eight years ago today, US Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the surface of the Moon.
Armstrong and Aldrin landed the lunar module “Eagle” in the Moon’s “Sea of Tranquility” on June 20, 1969, fulfilling a pledge by President John F Kennedy that a landing would take place before 1970.
Armstrong was the first to step down from the module’s ladder to the surface.
The landing was filmed and along with his first words: “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” was broadcast back to Earth to a worldwide television audience.
The pair spent over 20 hours on the Moon before lifting off to rejoin the Apollo 11 command module, piloted by Michael Collins, for the trip back to Earth.
