Congratulations and thanks to all members of the Expo Committee for such a well organised event that continues to remain one of the very successful and unique events at the showground. This event sends a lot of dollars through the local economy, with our small businesses and accommodation venues all having a busy few days. It is amazing to see such a variety of stalls, events and exhibitors all gathered at the one venue for one day.

The headline “Growth Slow for Nyngan” report based on population predictions for the next 20 years from the State Government’s report, titled “The Central West and Orana Regional Plan 2017” was a negative headline, disappointing to read. Population predictions have some value in the future provision of services and the retention of Government agencies, but to suggest growth will be slow for Nyngan flies in the face of reality. On the same page of the local paper as this article was an article indicating a new midwifery service for new mothers was to commence in Nyngan, and on the opposite page the heading “Nyngan Ag Expo has it all”. In the same paper were reports of the opening of our new Medical Centre, our new bike and walking track around the bottom weir and reports of successful dog trials at the showground.
Those who believe the report that growth will be slow for Nyngan should take a drive around town where they would see at least a dozen new homes either being built or recently occupied. Despite some empty shops in our main street, I believe we remain a safe and attractive town to visit or consider moving to live in, with good schools, child care, medical services, sporting facilities, business and law and order.
The Viewing Platform at the Solar Farm will see some public access finally commence. AGL advise that it will be open from 2pm to 4pm on a Thursday and 10am to 12noon on a Friday of this month. Daylight access needs to increase as it remains of enormous tourism benefit to our Shire as the largest Solar Farm in Australia.
I commend the recent flyer distributed by the Shire’s General Manager, Derek Francis about the projects we have endorsed for Government’s consideration to fund from their “Stronger Country Communities Fund”. You may be one of the 100 residents that the Government will contact to gauge community support of the Larkin Oval Lights, upgrades to the Golf Course irrigation system and Heritage and Moonagee Parks. We believe they fit the fund criteria, and would certainly benefit our town.
The late Peter Weston OAM made an enormous contribution to the rural industry in our Shire, and beyond, and will be sadly missed. His family property pioneered many ways to improve dry land pasture growth, and Peter invented the Western Fence to deter feral animals from crops and pasture. He received the Bogan Shire Citizen of the Year Award, an Order of Australia Medal, and a State Award for Environment Protection and Enhancement.
