Some would say a wild bunch but we believed we had a real shot at the title.
We had an array of talent from 16-year-old Tim Walsh right up to the consistent duo of Billy Barrow and Don Smith who must be a little older.
While other teams were decked out in the latest outfits sponsored by their huge clubs, we turned up in our well-worn outfits looking battle hardened and determined to succeed. The results speak for themselves.
On the second day, we won our section by the barest of margins from a crucial win by Steve Read’s team and the result from another team giving us a slender majority of points to progress.
To say a few of the opposition supporters were unhappy is an understatement and I really thought we would need to provide Andrew with a bodyguard as the sun set.
Duck Grimmond, our reserve player over the weekend, the obvious choice.
The semi-final had us up against Merimbula who were last year’s champions.
They boasted an excellent state player and a strong line-up which showed early as we were outclassed on all rinks as the margin shot out to 20 shots.
However, when I heard an opposition’s mobile phone go off with the ringtone of ‘Eye of the Tiger’, I knew things were changing.
Steve Read’s team came back from the dead, Rex’s side stayed solid and Tim Ryan’s side were just on fire.
Unbelievably we won the match on the last bowl.
Our final opponent was the very strong St Johns Park side who have over 600 bowlers compared to about 40 Nyngan pennant players.
A real David versus Goliath adventure which suited us just beautifully.
At 38-all after 38 ends, it could’ve gone either way but with the majority of crowd support from other ‘country’ towns, Nyngan were just too strong scoring an emphatic 71-51 victory.
A rare occurrence but I think I saw some grown Nyngan men holding back tears as we all congratulated each other.
