A traditional smoking ceremony, music and speeches all added to the well-attended ceremony.
School vice captain Tom Harris looked after proceedings and chaired the ceremony.
Principal Michael Gibson, students Tahlea Ryan, Ella Meldrum and special guest Phil Sullivan all spoke about the importance of ‘Language Matters’, this year’s NAIDOC theme.
Tahlea and Ella acknowledged the importance of the High School’s Language Other Than English (LOTE) program which teaches the native language of the Wongaibon Nation.
“Nyngan High School took on the challenge for LOTE,” Tahlea said referring to learning the indigenous language.
“These languages are fading fast. We at Nyngan High School are proud of our language program.”
Students were also treated to a version of ‘My Island Home’ by Atahlia Sutherland and a lullaby by the year vocal group.
