Di Donald was at her very best in the mid-week competition, she was on track to score a record individual total of 50 points, in the end three washouts left with an imposing score of 44 points.
The nearest to her was the consistent Dolly Ryan on 32 points, plus the nearest to the pin.
Also on the course after a long absence was Rhonda Holmes who battled away and finished on level terms with her in-law Jenny Holmes.
Saturdays par event went to Pat Walsh with plus four.
Level pegging with Rex Vane at the drinks break, Pat maintained his score while Rex went backward to finish with plus three.
The quiet achiever Les Dirrington with a big finish almost stole the show, a washout on the 17th left him stranded on plus three.
Pin winners were Lee Stevens, Tex and John Wynne.
Sunday was a lay day for the league grand final.
Next weekend we have a stroke on Saturday and a stableford on Sunday.
The Nyngan open is on the week after kicking off with a four ball on the Saturday.
Badge draw is for $500 this week.
Kelly Donohoe had her first ever putt in her life and it was worth $1650.
A quick delivery down the leg side meant no fairytale finish for her.
TWILIGHT GOLF
Nyngan HAHN Super 4 Twilight Series
In 2017/18 the familiar twilight golf competition at the Nyngan Golf Club, will be taking on a few exciting changes. The NGC committee have come up with some new promotions and fresh sponsorship, to see the event rebranded and ready for another great series across the summer.
With the addition of regular player prizes, overall competition prizes and a ‘closing week’ celebration planned, it is hoped that all the regular players will be back and some new additions will join the action. The 2016/17 competition had a very healthy 19 teams competing and we hope to emulate that interest for this season.
Rebranded as the ‘Nyngan HAHN Super 4 Twilight Series’, the competition tee’s-off on the 9th October and will run until mid-April, 2018. Teams of four players will square-off weekly against each other, in an Ambrose team competition, battling for bragging rights and the title of Twilight Champions.
A new Green Fees structure will be available this year, allowing a “Summer Membership” for $100 which provides entry into the Twilight Series and the opportunity to play in Sunday morning Ambrose competitions, with a small game-day fee, between October and May. For full-playing members, their $185 fees cover entry for the series, opportunity to play in all competitions and the flexibility to play ‘for free’ on any day outside of competition.
A familiar face in Don Lister will mentor the committee in coordinating the Twilight Series. Entries can be completed by contacting Don, President Tony Beetson or Club Captain Greg Matheson, with teams needing to register during September and early October, by completing the forms along with a $40 entry fee for each team. There are promotions planned throughout the Twilight Series with a fortnightly barbecue for players and members, whilst the Ambrose Restaurant will be putting on some delicious meals every Thursday night. The committee is inviting teams to join in the fun and kick-on at “the golfie” with a great social gathering each week.
RUGBY LEAGUE
GROUP 11
NYNGAN TIGERS
By Trevor Waterhouse
The Nyngan Tigers have fell at the last hurdle going down 34 to 18 to CYMS in the big one.
We were in it up to our ears, trailing 22 to 18 with 15 minutes to go, but just couldn't crack the CYMS to get in front.
Every game has turning points and this one had several.
Ill discipline and a couple of errors cost us at times, but that's footy.
Stewie Mills deserves a huge wrap for what he's achieved, this was our most successful season in group 11 and he can take a lot of credit for it.
Reece Goldsmith was phenomenal, he made 50 plus tackles and I mean tackles, he kept whacking the CYMS from go to woe.
He pushed himself to exhaustion, and was our best for mine.
Jacob also tried his guts out, as did old Luke, who deserved a better finish.
I know it hurts boys but get your head up and be proud of what you've achieved.
We we’ll be back bigger and better next year, the presentation will be held this Saturday night at the RSL club starting at 6.30pm.
Tickets are available at the club or by contacting Tara McDermott.
Good luck to all the Tigers under-11s who play Narromine in the grand final this Saturday.
Go you little Tigers.
Nyngan’s maiden victory not to be
By Nick Guthrie
The build-up to Sunday’s first grade grand final was dominated by the excitement around Nyngan as the Tigers prepared for their maiden Group 11 decider. But that’s not the way Tim Ryan saw it.
The Tigers faithful had the chance to be a part of grand final week for the first time and while it was seven straight deciders for CYMS, that didn’t make the 34-18 victory at Caltex Park any less sweet. “It was all about Nyngan never having won one so my theme for this week was, what where they celebrating about? We’ve won 14 now and that’s something to be proud of,” he said. “All week I drummed into the boys every year we’ve won the competition and made it about how we wanted to join them in the history books and we did that.”
While the final margin was 16 points, the match in front of a massive 5125 fans was far closer. The sides seemed certain to go into half-time at 12-all but two minutes before the break a bomb from Alex Bonham, who went on to be named the Bob Weir Medal winner for best on ground, was allowed to bounce 20m from the Nyngan line and CYMS regathered, put it through the hands and Matt Naden scored.
Both Ryan and Nyngan captain-coach Stewart Mills stated that was a major moment in the match, and despite the Tigers getting within four points in the second half, the Fishies were too strong defensively while also counter-punching with class.
Making the win even the more impressive was the fact Naden and Ben Marlin didn’t play in the second half due to injury while fullback Kieran Cubby-Shipp battled through a severe corked thigh for most of the game.
The win rid CYMS of any memories of last season’s shock grand final loss to Forbes and made it three titles in the five years Ryan has been at the helm.
“It was just rewards, I think, for the five years of hard work,” Ryan said.
“This is the pinnacle and why we start work in pre-season, for a day like this with a crowd like this. It doesn’t get any better.”
CYMS shot out of the gates early, Cubby-Shipp jinking his way to the tryline inside three minutes.
Both sides had chances as the game swung to-and-fro but in the blink of an eye Nyngan was in front through tries to Bennu Cokanasiga and Brett Howard.
Wade Kavanagh crossed after a simple right-to-left move to help get it all square before Naden’s four-pointer meant CYMS went into the break with a 16-12 lead.
Bonham plucked a Mills pass 10m out from his own line and raced 90m to make it 22-12 and while Nyngan again hit back through Mitch Rixon, Bonham muscled his way across for a second to make the margin 10.
Viliame Turuva scored right on full-time to seal it.
RESULTS Sunday September 10 Caltex Park, Dubbo First Grade DUBBO CYMS 34 (Alex Bonham 2, Kieran Cubby-Shipp, Wade Kavanagh, Matt Naden, Viliame Turuva tries; Bonham 2 goals, Brad Pickering 3 goals) defeated NYNGAN TIGERS 18 (Benni Cokanasiga, Brett Howard, Mitch Rixon tries; Sam Simmonds 3 goals)
FUTSAL
Disciples 2017 champions
'The Disciples' are the new Nyngan Futsal (indoor soccer) champions for 2017. After remaining undefeated through the fourteen rounds, Stu Rufus' team were odds-on to take out the title (like the Melbourne Storm) but Toby Miles' 'Team Discovery' side had other ideas. In the major semi-final Team Discovery convincingly defeated The Disciples sending shockwaves through Sportsbet and TAB websites.
The Disciples had to do it the hard way and win a hard fought final against Elvina Hughan's 'Young Ones' to seek a chance at redemption in the grand final.
On grand final night, in front of a vocal crowd, the two top teams traded shot for shot with the defence of both sides shining through in the first half to finish at 2-2 at the break. However, a crucial injury to Luke Matheson really affected the flow of 'Team Discovery' and despite a determined effort by Tim Walsh, Grace Ryan, Bianca Scott, Erin Kendall and Natalie Bulmer, 'The Disciples' were simply too good. Irish Pete has been a standout all year along with the most improved player of 2017 Alex Toole and with Jordan Rufus making some terrific saves in goals, the final score ballooned out to 11-3.
A huge thanks to the eight teams who participated this year. It was the closest comp in years and the quality only gets better each time. Keep your ear to the ground around March next year if you want to join this exciting competition.
