Council held an Extraordinary (Special) meeting last Thursday to further consider efforts by the State Government to apply for significant Commonwealth Government Funding ($37 million) to become part of the $75 million needed to pipe the Albert Priest Channel. Application for funding would need to be lodged by September 21. In line with our earlier resolution, Council unanimously resolved to not support the NSW Government’s application to the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund, for funding of the pipeline at this stage. We believe that a proposed 3000 mega litre off river storage, together with the two smaller 700 mega litre off river storages, are the better resolutions to the long term water security needs of Bogan and Cobar Shires. Should the extreme event ever occur where the Macquarie River ceased to flow, as Burrendong Dam became dry, a pipeline would be of use compared to water available in off river storages. We are firmly committed to public consultation with all water users in our community once we know what affect the pipeline cost, and associated pumping and maintenance costs will have on the future price of water. This consultation will not be completed till the end of February next year.

The ideal end of season outcome for the Bogan Bulls and Nyngan Tigers would have been premiership wins, but sadly not to be this year. Congratulations to the Tigers for getting to the Grand Final against a team from a city. They can certainly hold their heads high after a tremendous season. A great end to the season for the Bull’s Reserve Grade Team, winning the premiership against Walgett, and with the First Grade side getting to the finals, it’s also been a good year.
Thank you to all those who took part in the photo competition about the Beauty on the Bogan. All the photos, from various angles and different positions, showed the best of our colourful river. Most of those who entered gathered at Rotary Park last Wednesday to receive prizes and certificates for participation. A couple of shade shelters over our picnic tables and a small children’s playground will finish out major upgrades to Rotary Park.
I attended the first meeting of the Western Slopes Pipeline Community Consultative Committee last week in Warren, as Bogan Shire Council’s Representative. This committee has a Northern and Southern Group, with four community members and a representation from Warren, Cobar and Lachlan Shire. Pipeline representatives has already had a lot of consultation with land holders along the proposed route, with this committee able to pass on to them many concerns about the proposed route and how the pipeline will be laid. The whole process awaits Santos getting the required approvals to extract the gas from the fields near Narrabri.
