On the newly named Owen Payne oval, the Brown Snakes juggernaut rolled on; this time on the back of a fine display power hitting from the man known for his side profile.
Batting after winning the toss, Smith and Jak Jeffery made a solid start before Jeffery and first drop Terrance Ryan were done by some good seam bowling.
Toby Miles came and went cheaply, bringing Jackson Hedges to the crease.
Hedges proceeded to play second fiddle to Smith, leaning on his bat as Smith engaged in some of the cleanest hitting you’re likely to see in any game of cricket.
He was 100 by drinks and he and Hedges ended up putting on 170 for the fourth wicket. When he was out for 164 he had hit ten sixes, many of them clearing the pickets by a way and having locals dive from the comfort of their camping chairs for cover.
Some late hitting from Michael Gibson and Matt Sheather took the Snakes to seven for 316 off the allotted overs.
Hedges finished with fifty-odd in his first inter-town match and it was the biggest score for Nyngan in recent and even distant memory.
Cobar were never going to lie down and 60 runs for the first wicket had them almost sniffing a game was on.
Cameron Bourke and Jeffery were decent with the new ball but some poor fielding get them down.
Smith had hit ten sixes, many having locals dive from the comfort of their camping chairs for cover.
- Toby Miles.
Enter Terrance Ryan, the young leggy with control that defies his lack of experience and age. He had the Cobar skipper second ball and dictated the pace of the middle overs with his variation and flight. His ten straight overs brought three wickets and he was unlucky not to have more.
From the other end Dylan Franklin bowled well, as did Matt Sheather.
A fifty from the Cobar number seven took them over 200 but they were never really in the hunt.
This match was for the Shane Smith Memorial Cup, as well as the Brewery Shield and Western Plains Cup.
It was a fitting end for the day for some of the players to meet Ron Smith, father of Shane, at the Aussie for a few squashes out of the cup that bears his late son’s name.
It is to Narromine next weekend for the Snakes in the cup and the shield. A bus will be going and all are encouraged to play or support as appropriate.
Bogan Brown Snakes 7-316 (T. Smith 164, J.Hedges 53) beat Cobar 238 (M. Holt 77, T. Ryan 3-50)
