NSW Waratah backrower Matt Sandell was on hand to help run the skills and drills, with about 40 kids taking advantage of the chance to learn from NSW’s finest.
Another 60 kids took part in the camp at Coonamble, home of Waratahs lock Ned Hanigan.
NSW Rugby Union Development Officer Angus McDonald said Nyngan juniors excelled at the camp.
“There’s a lot of skillful little kids around Nyngan,” he said. “We were pretty happy with it, for the first ever camp that we have run in Western Plains … it gives us a good building block to coming back in the future.”
Nyngan High School’s girls side were among the juniors at the camp and Mr McDonald said it was a great opportunity for the girls to consolidate their skills ahead of the upcoming CHS Rugby Sevens Championships.
“All the skills and drills that they do are from [Waratahs coach] Daryl Gibson, he has a lot of input into the training sessions so it’s based on what they’re doing in rep programs in Sydney,” Mr McDonald said. “There’s some pretty advanced stuff in there and the kids responded pretty well to it.”
Matt Sandell also took some of the budding forwards and props through some scrum shape drills.
Mr McDonald said more camps at Nyngan were “on the horizon”, with more information to be released once the details had been finalised.
