Hopefully season wise this year will be a bit more of an average nature after the extremities of the last two.
With Australia Day approaching next week, everyone is invited to the Town Hall for our annual celebrations. Breakfast at 8.00am followed by the presentation of our Australia Day Awards, and address by our Australia Day Ambassador, former International Hurdler, Mr Kyle Vander-Kuyp.
Free admission to the pool will be available following the morning’s events. Thank you to those who took the time to nominate people and events for these awards, providing our community with an opportunity to acknowledge with appreciation those who do a lot locally or perform well at sport.
Council has expressed its concern to rail authorities and our local State Member after reading notification that ore trains will be travelling through Nyngan at 80km per hour. Previously ore trains have been travelling through town at about 20km/h or stopping.
Warning advice has been posted on the level crossing at Hoskins Street, about changed conditions, and a lot of work done on the other two presumably in preparation for this change. It is hard to understand why the ore trains need to travel through town so fast, but for a safety’s sake a major upgrade will be needed to the Hoskins Street and Mitchell Highway level crossings.
It is good to know that State Government funding has been secured for new floodlights at Larkin Oval, and a new irrigation system for part of the Golf Club Course and upgrade to Heritage and Moonagee Parks.
These three projects are scheduled for early this year. Sealing of the remaining 7 kms of the Hermidale Nymagee Road is planned for March to May and if funds and time permits, another 1 km will be sealed on Cockies Road. Quotes are being prepared so community and Council consideration can be given to projects for the second round of this State Government funding.
These are some heating and other improvements to the pool, and a cement cycleway connecting the Flood Memorial Car Park from the Shearing Shed to the path around the Weir Pool. Council approved a new design for the entrance to the Cemetery after considering two submissions within the project budget of $20,000. The design consists of two brick and steel columns, incorporating a wattle pattern, with a steel archway with Nyngan Cemetery displayed in steel cut outs. On either end of the arch are wheat sheaves and a cow and sheep’s head, with two doves in the centre.
Council farewelled Mr Ty Robson, Manager of Development and Environmental Services at the end of last year following his resignation. We wish him well for the future and thank him for his contribution to Bogan Shire, particularly at the Early Learning Centre and Medical Centre Complex.
