Two highlights of last week’s council meeting were a citizenship ceremony and presentation of two police medals. Mrs Viveki Manas Upadhyay, surrounded by members of her family repeated the oath and became an Australian Citizen. National Police Medals were awarded to former policemen Mr Barry Gudgeon and Mr Graham Tomek by local Inspector Steve Munn and Sergeant Tony Wood. Both Barry and Graham had details of their distinguished careers read out and certainly deserved this recognition.

Councillors and staff were pleased to welcome and congratulate our visitors, on both becoming an “Aussie”, and receiving National Police Medals. Don’t forget Seniors Week which has come around again and starts on Monday 9 April. A top program has been organised for the week, when we join all other communities in acknowledging the substantial contribution our “senior actives” make to our communities.
The Seniors Morning Tea and presentation of the Bogan Shire Senior Citizen of 2018 will be held at the Town Hall Supper Room on Thursday morning, 12 April.
Nominations are open and welcomed for residents to nominate someone whose efforts in our community are worthy of recognition. Congratulations to the Elias family as Nyngan Toyota celebrates 45 years this year, of operations in Nyngan.
Some progress has been made with our efforts to have ore train speeds return to safe levels through town. Local State Member Kevin Humphries took our concerns and the good letters to Transport Minister Constance, who was understanding of the safety issues. He instructed one of his department people to talk to John Holland Rail, and wants them back in his office after Easter to report.
Trains speeding through town gains nothing in terms of time between Cobar and the coast, and only increases risks. Councillors and Staff spent a lot of time at last week’s meeting discussing what projects we would nominate for Round Two of the State Governments Stronger Country Communities Fund.
The Government have doubled the amount for Round Two with Bogan Shire qualifying for $1,581,630. Round Two Applications have opened and close on 5 May, with successful projects announced in August.
Taking into account community consultation, we have nominated the following projects, which exceed the amount of grant funding available in case some are rejected. In order of priority, these projects are:
1. Swimming pool solar heating and re-surfacing (tiling.) 2. Cycleway pathway from Shearing Shed to river. 3. New Jockeys Room at Racecourse under existing grandstand. 4. Seniors Living – 4 Units. 5. Small Water Playground and half basketball court at pool. 6. Improvements to Town Hall. 7. Larkin Oval – Announcer box and canteen improvements. 8. Pontoon and Shelter – Tottenham Road Water Storage.
