The Nyngan Old Time Dance Group, who have been floating around the ballroom for over 10 years, gather together and raise money for clubs and charities in Nyngan each year.
Organisers Patricia and Clive Cook who host the social dance group at the Nyngan RSL, said members donate $5 each week for the class, which is pooled together and given to clubs and charities in town. This year the group have raised $1000, which they decided to give to cancer support group CanAssist.
“In the past the group have donated to the Hospital Auxiliary, Cancer Council and Tour de OROC,” Mrs Cook said.
“This time we all decided CanAssist do such a great job and we voted we would donate to them.”
President Lynette Webster and Treasurer Merrill Peterson from CanAssist were present on Monday night to receive the donation and discussed to the group how the organisation helps people.
The Nyngan branch began five years ago to help community members in the Bogan shire affected by cancer. “Our branch started with seven women who had been affected by cancer, or knew people who were affected and could see the challenges people faced,” said Ms Webster.

“Today this has grown to 20 people that help out and many more who volunteer their time to assist with our fundraisers.”
Today there are over 52 branches across NSW with each raising money for locals affected by cancer. Ms Peterson said all money is raised through private donations or fundraising such as their annual High Tea. “We’ve had some very generous donations from community members,” Ms Peterson said.
“There have been 90 applications in our small community, which sadly demonstrates lots of people are going through a cancer journey,” Ms Webster said.

“It’s so great we can take off some of that financial burden for people,” Ms Peterson said. “Thank you so much for your generous donation.”
The social dance group invite everyone, young and old, to dust off their dancing shoes and come along.
