National Tree Day rolled around again last Friday with Bogan Shire again major participants. A line of native trees was planted along the edge of Nymagee Street between the highway and the railway line. Thanks to all those who prepared the holes and drip systems, and all who planted the trees including a lot of our local school pupils.

We hope to hear in August if one of our second round of projects from the Stronger Country Communities State Fund, a cement path from the Shearing Shed to the river will be successful. If so, these trees will form an attractive edge to the path.
Last year’s tree planting project, a line of trees along the Essential Energy fence on the edge of the truck stop are all growing well. The native trees planted a couple of years ago along the highway into town from Dubbo form an attractive part of the entrance into Nyngan.
At last week’s Council Meeting Council had the pleasure of welcoming seven new Australians to our town at a Citizenship Ceremony. Ray and Yolanda Tollemache (from South Africa) and John, Ruth, Jordan, Napoleon and Nathanie Sipendi (from Papua New Guinea) became Aussies!
Council accepted the tender of Laser Electrical Dubbo for the Design, Supply and Installation of sports lighting for Larkin Oval and the Netball Courts. It will be great for the town to finally have these lights installed after many previous unsuccessful attempts to gain grant funding. These funds are part of the first round of the State’s Stronger Country Communities Fund. The lights should take between eight to ten weeks to install.
Council also decided to install Solar PV Systems at the Medical Centre, Early Learning Centre, Council Chambers and the Works Depot. Budget funds of $80,000 to cover the cost of installation will come from Council’s Major Development Fund, with an estimated payback period of between 3.6 to 4.1 years.
Advice from AGL indicated that from mid-August access to the Viewing Platform at the Solar Farm will be increased thanks to a solar powered automatic sliding gate. It will be good to have one of our major tourist attractions available on a daily basis.
Local State Member Kevin Humphries was in town last week to participate in the official opening of the four new dialysis chairs at the Hospital. These chairs have been in operation for a while, and as Kevin said, will save local people and some from further west needing this treatment, a trip to Dubbo as Nyngan becomes a hub.
Kevin also joined Councillors, some locals, representatives from the Nymagee Hera Mine contractors and Bogan Shire staff who had constructed the seven kms of the Hermidale Nymagee Road to the Shire boundary at the opening of this new sealed section.
Council staff have done a top job on this road and finished it six weeks earlier than planned. With no ribbon available, Kevin used one of the local’s pen knife to cut some length of hay baling twine across the road! Thank you to Cobar Shire Council for providing the water for the construction.
It is a Local Government Legislative requirement that a Council must pay Councillors the minimum fee annually determined by the Remuneration Tribunal.
Therefore Council decided to donate an amount of $2,459 to Can Assist. This amount is the difference between last year’s Councillor, Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Fee and the minimum required to be paid this year.
Maintenance of Nyngan Town Reservoirs will commence from Monday, August 13 and run through to Friday 31 August. During this period if residents experience low water pressure or poor water quality please contact Trevor Waterhouse on 0409 078 762.
