Each new member is confronted with the difficulty of how to have a chat in Nyngan.
It can be daunting and very different to city conversations.
In three simple steps I will show how to communicate effectively in the Bogan Shire, including all essential verbal and non-verbal communication methods needed to survive.
Step 1: knowing what to say.
In the Bogan Shire knowing what to say is half the battle.
If in doubt refer back to the following topics: the weather more specifically the last time it rained, generic day-to-day chat ‘What’s for tea?’ ‘Going to Dubbo on the weekend?’ and you can discuss football ladders: NRL or Group 11.
Now that you know what to say when having a conversation with someone, it is equally important to know what not to say.
These topics include politics, religion and race. Avoid the following statements ‘I’m really not liking this rain’ and, ‘I read this really good book…’.
Step 2: how to say what you are saying.
With the aim of having a laid-back tone, here are the essentials that you must cover: never add an angry emphasis on words, but do talk slightly louder than in a normal conversation.
Talk slowly and always seem like you are thinking while speaking so you don’t seem too confident.
Add in ‘ummm’ ‘like’ and ‘uhhh’ randomly into conversation or add a question mark to the end of a statement.
Step 3: what to do when you are talking.
Non-verbal communication is important in all encounters with residents of the Bogan Shire.
Here are some examples of basic non-verbal communication: eye contact, having a welcoming body language while not standing too tall and strong.
Down the street a slight wave is critical.
When you drive past someone you can nod or raise a single index finger from the steering wheel.
If you follow those simple steps you’ll soon find yourself at home in the friendliest shire going.
