Have you seen early photos of the pioneering men from this area? Invariably you will notice that the men are wearing a full suit and tie, even to go to work. Without our technologically advanced, easy care fabrics, cleaning these suits would have been a cumbersome task. To keep their men looking their best, the suit would have been given a brisk once over with the bristle brush. According to ‘A Curated Man’, the natural animal bristle brush is apparently the best way, even today, to care for your woollen suit. The fabric in the suit wears over time as dirt and unseen particles build up, which eventually affects the integrity of the fabric, causing it to weaken and stop looking as good. A decent suit brush will help you prolong its life.
The brush set pictured is presented in a faux leather, silk lined box which includes two natural animal hair brushes and a polished metal mirror. This set was donated by Donald Gibson and most likely belonged to his father, Wilfred Gibson. Wilfred and his wife Dorrie were avid Nyngan Historical Society members and were engaged in the publication of the ‘Nyngan On The Bogan’ book which is a marvellous snap shot of the history of the Nyngan District.
In themselves, the artefacts at the Nyngan Museum paint a wonderful picture of the life of people in our history, but when you can link them to real people their story comes alive.
Visit Us Today: Monday- Friday from 9am to 4pm. Saturday’s from 10am until 12noon. Nyngan is located on the banks of the Bogan River in Outback New South Wales. In 1990 the Bogan River flooded the township and much history was destroyed. The Museum was established by a wonderful group of locals wanting to collect local family history, relics and items of historical significance.
