With 645,000 travellers visiting Outback NSW a year, the potential of tourism to the local economy is immense. Therefore the Shire has decided to open the doors of its most visited attraction, the Nyngan Museum and Visitor Information Centre, to local business people on Wednesday, October 24 from 7pm until 9pm.
The ‘Night at the Museum’ is sponsored by Industry NSW as part of Small Business month and free to all Bogan Shire business people and their staff.

Each year more than 6000 people call into the Visitor Information Centre, based at the Museum, to ask about attractions, directions and to seek assistance. Many of them leave their local shopping receipts, showing they spend money at a broad range of businesses from supermarkets, accommodation and food providers, mechanics, the chemist, newsagents, hardware shop, service stations and more.
Destination NSW estimates every visitor who stayed a night in the region has spent $152 in the local economy, which proves tourism has major potential in our Shire. The challenge is to encourage visitors to stay longer, by offering them a range of accommodation and entertainment options.
The Night at the Museum will provide an opportunity for local business people to liaise with Nyngan Visitor Information Centre staff to see first-hand how the Shire is being promoted and to investigate any future opportunities.
It will also provide a special opportunity for local people to tour the Nyngan Museum, which is one of the most popular tourism attractions in the Bogan Shire with its extensive collection of military, social, railway, and flood history.
Destination NSW research shows if local people have an understanding of the tourism offer in the Shire they will also be able to promote tourism through their businesses, creating a win-win situation for the local community.
A Night in the Museum will feature canapés prepared by budding local tourism business, the Cocky’s Wife. All guests will be able to tour the Museum collection, which is one of the best in the region.
