Last year’s runners up, the RSL, were looking to start well in their campaign to go one better this season and were happy to announce some key signings made in the wake of the folding of the Bowling Club Colts.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
Aussie skipper Adrian Taylor won the toss and had no hesitation in batting on a wet Number 2 track.
The Bull started well and 0-35 after not many.
Dave Motley then produced a fine catch off his own bowling to remove Toby Miles and Tyler Martin was keeping things reasonable tight at the other end.
Regular partnerships would be the key for the Aussie and their batsmen delivered. Tim Walsh, Obi and Tom from the mine, Stuart Barton and Michael Gibson all made double figures, whilst Jason Holmes produced some impressive big hitting to pick up the run rate.
Liam Wherritt was great in the latter end of the innings and was probably the pick of the bowlers. Dick Hoare was also at his reliable best. The Bulls finished on 163 which was probably above par given the moist outfield.
In reply the RSL lost inspirational skipper Glen Berwick early. It was a most charitable dismissal from the publican of the opposition’s sponsor, as he aggressively knocked a seemingly innocuous ball onto his own stumps.
It should be noted that the bowler of said delivery is an enthusiastic patron of his establishment.
Things did not get much better for the team formerly known as the Old Boys, and an inability to turn the strike over and form partnerships was an area they will look to improve on.
Liam Wherritt provided some good resistance to tight Aussie bowling but could not get the assistance from the other end.
Bill Quarmby latched onto a couple of loose deliveries to give the crowd something to cheer about but his bat has been reported for its ridiculously sized edges and will be the basis for a lengthy discussion when the tribunal gets together for the week.
The pick of the bowlers was undoubtable Tom, who finished with an incredible 5/1.
RSL finished 100 runs short but showed some stoic defence that can be built upon.
This weekend the Aussie takes on Dalkeith in a mouth watering encounter, 12pm on the turf.
