For the first time this season a game was played on the turf on Number 3 oval and the pitch held a few surprises for both teams.
Winning the toss, Dalkeith skipper Jackson Hedges did not hesitate in electing to bat and seemed elated at the result; fist pumping his way to his cricket kit.
That was about as good as it got, however, for the young skipper, who would be back at the victor’s sponsor in under three hours.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
Dylan Franklin was the first to go, done by a ball holding up off a length and spooning a return catch to Toby Miles.
Brad McDougall and Roy Herbert were caught behind the wicket going hard at balls they might have left.
New signing Tony Payne showed he was no mug with the bat but seemed bemused by the lack of pace in the outfield. He will soon realise that the fields at Frank Smith are nothing like the carpets of the Kangaroo Valley and perhaps adjust his game accordingly.
He and Hedges put on a few for the fourth wicket but were both undone by some wile off breaks.
The side finished all out for 43.
In response the Aussie lost Miles cheaply, but the subcontinental wonders Obi and Jagdeep consolidated.
Jagdeep punished anything loose and attempted to do the same to anything that wasn’t. He was bowled by Dylan Franklin attempting to hit a yorker into Hawley’s Engineering and Steel Supplies.
Come together mining wonderkids Connor and Tom, who saw the Bulls home with a nice mix of patience and hitting.
Bon Franklin bowled well, but simply didn’t have the runs on the board to defend.
This weekend will see a grand final rematch with the RSL taking on Dalkeith at 12pm.
Both sides are looking for their first win of the season so it should be a cracker.
Aussie Bulls 3-44 defeated Dalkieth 43.
