The Bogan Shire Council has received a “useless” response from the state government regarding train speeds though Nyngan and will petition to reduce speed and upgrade the crossing at Hoskins street.

Bogan Shire mayor Ray Donald said the letter received from Minister Melinda Pavey, five months after their initial letter of concern, stated crossings in Nyngan meet engineering standards, and that while trains could travel 80 km/h through town, advice from John Holland Rail stated the speed would not exceed 40km/h.

Cr Donald however said the main concern is still safety, which was not addressed.
“A set of lights amount to nothing when you think of horrendous potential if an accident were to occur,” he said.
Now the council will begin a petition to upgrade the crossing at Hoskins street to include flashing lights, and for trains to travel no faster than 40 km/h.
“I'm quite sure the community will respond to the petition,” Cr Donald said.
