Traffic operation Safe Return will begin on midnight January 25 and conclude at 11.59 January 28.
Acting Inspector for the Central North Police District Gavin Smith said during this time there will be an increased police presence on roads across the region.
“Given the last couple of weeks of fatal accidents across the whole state, we just appeal to people that when they’re in the car that they focus 100 per cent on driving,” Inspector Smith said.
“There’s been some really sad things happen on the roads in the last couple of weeks, which isn’t a great start to the year.”
Inspector Smith said the police operation will be targeting excessive or inappropriate speed, alcohol and drug driving, fatigue, non-wearing of occupant restraints and helmets and distractions such as mobile phones

Double demerits will also be in effect for speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences.
“There will be extra police working over this weekend to make sure that everyone’s safe,” he said.
”Safe Return coincides with the Australia Day weekend as well, so we’ve got a lot of people returning home from where they’ve been for the Christmas break,” Inspector Smith said.
High visibility patrols will also be conducted by police this weekend to ensure Australia Day celebrations stick to the true spirit of mateship.
Australia Day Operation Commander, Assistant Commissioner Karen Webb APM is reminding the community to act responsibly.
“We want everyone to have an enjoyable time celebrating everything that is great about being Australian, as well as encouraging visitors to join in at local events,” Assistant Commissioner Webb said.
“Police are not here to ruin anyone’s fun; however, anti-social or dangerous behaviour will not be tolerated.
“If you’re planning on having a drink, remember the coveted national culture of ‘mateship’ – look after your mates and drink in moderation,” Assistant Commissioner Webb said.
