Some progress may be under way in relation to our efforts to have flashing lights at the Hoskins Street railway crossing. Minister for Western NSW, Hon Adam Marshall, advised us last week that someone from Transport NSW will be in touch with us very soon to work out an agreed plan and I know local member Roy Butler has spoken to the Deputy Premier about the safety aspect of this crossing.

During this month we will have a new Postmaster and staff commence duties at our local Post Office. Col and Jan are moving onto retirement, Col after over fifty years working there and Jan not far behind. On behalf of Council I thank them both for the many years they have operated our Post Office in their reliable and efficient way and wish them well for the future. The baton passes to the Hoy Family.
There would be few small businesses that have changed so much in that time in relation to what they sell and how they operate. I have received reports that the office of the Nyngan Observer in Pangee Street may be closing later this month. On hearing this, I sent a couple of strong emails objecting to this action.
I have been told by the Southern NSW Area Manager of Australian Community Media that our local paper will continue and no final decision about the office will be announced until the middle of this month.
The business is not closing but may be vacating the current space in Pangee Street. The Nyngan Observer newspaper and website will continue to be published and distributed as is - serving local advertisers and readers, and the community will still have access to our Observer staff.
I was told these measures are necessary to reduce overheads so the publication of the Nyngan Observer may continue. I have told them that council, who own the Nyngan Observer office, are quite prepared to discuss leasing arrangements with the owners.
I am keen to ensure that our local paper and its local content remain strong and that coverage of our community is not done from Dubbo.
This is important at a time when local residents need good news stories, local articles and photos, local ads and sporting results and other local media items.
Following requests received for financial assistance for Rates and Charges levied on Community Service Organisations, Council will provide financial assistance to the Nyngan Baptist Fellowship, the Trustees of the Bobadah Hall, Nyngan Girl Guides and Nyngan Water Ski Club. As the current drought continues, our roadwork's program has had to be radically restricted due to lack of water. Maintenance grading and resheeting has only been possible on three roads this month. Widening some 4km of the Mitchell Highway, north of Nyngan near "Wilgaree" will also occur.
Despite the dry conditions, the tidy attractive appearance of our town continues, thanks to the efforts of residents and the shire outdoor staff involved.
