Samantha Isfahani says the affected mothers are surrounded by silence and stigma and their grief is exacerbated by the common misconception that stillbirth was inevitable.

Ms Isfahani was speaking at the launch of a new government health initiative to reduce Australia's rates of stillbirth from 28 weeks gestation by 20 per cent in three years.

It follows a Senate inquiry into stillbirths which recommended the development of an education kit to help health professionals discuss risk and strategies with pregnant women.

The Stillbirth Centre of Research Excellence says six babies are stillborn every day in Australia, a total of 2170 stillbirths every year.

The new Safer Baby Bundle, launched on Tuesday to coincide with International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, includes resources for families and health professionals.

Ms Isfahani's daughter, Evelyn, was stillborn in 2015, something she said still made her emotional to talk about.

"During my pregnancy with Evelyn, stillbirth and its associated risk factors were never communicated with me," Ms Isfahani said.

The bundle includes support for women to stop smoking during pregnancy - a risk factor in stillbirths - as well as improving detection of fetal conditions which could lead to stillborn babies.

"Stillbirth has become what I have believed to be a neglected epidemic," Ms Isfahani said.

"We have come to know and learn that in many cases it was preventable."

The bundle is also aimed at raising awareness and improving care for women with decreased fetal movements, education on a safe going-to-sleep position for mums in late pregnancy as well as improving decision-making about the timing of births for mums at risk of stillbirth.

The research centre's co-director David Elwood said urgent action was needed to address gaps in maternity care in Australia.
