In the space of only a few minutes, residents saw the dust rolling in at about 5.30pm before everything turned red.

While severe thunderstorms were predicted to hit the Central West bringing heavy rain, according to Elders weather Nyngan received just 1.3 millimetres of rain.

Parkes recorded the heaviest rainfalls with 35.8 millimetres recorded since 9am on Thursday, while wind gusts reached a peak of 93km/h at 4.26pm.

Heavy rain was also recorded in Cowra with 33.6mm received during the same time period and winds gusting up to 65km/h at 4.18pm

Orange received 19.4mm of rain with wind speeds up to 48km/h, while Forbes had 14.0mm of rain and wind gusts recorded at 80km/h at 3pm.

According to Forecaster for the Bureau of Meteorology Abrar Shabren thunderstorms are expected to continue through to Sunday.

"At this stage over the four day period from Thursday to Sunday, widespread totals will be about 80 to 50 millimetres, but that's more to the south," he said.

"Around the Central West Slopes and Plains you might see a little bit more 80 to 60 millimetres, but isolated falls could be heavier as well.

"Towards the western side Nyngan and Condobolin will get a little less, Forbes Parkes Wellington, Narromine Dubbo and Coonabarabran all these places will get a little more from the thunderstorms, or thunderstorm activity will be quite more pronounced."
