Dubbo Turf Club expected to elect a new board at annual general meeting

Current chairman Bob Ellis confirmed yesterday he would not be standing for re-election to his position or even a spot on the board, saying he was happy to leave at a time when the club is travelling well.

"We made a nice profit last year, bigger than the year before, and we had a great day of racing at the cup meeting on Sunday," Ellis said.

"I've been on the committee for eight years, and been president for six of them so it's probably time to give someone else a go.

"I'm 66 years old and there's a few things I want to do in life before I get too old so it's not a bad time to be getting out of it all."

Ellis' decision to leave the club comes on the heels of former secretary-manager Mark Day's decision to leave back in June, while Day's interim replacement Allyson Neave will also be finishing her time at the club this week.

Wellington club secretary Ian Giffin will fill the void on a temporary basis until a permanent successor for Day is found.

Applications for the position closed at the end of last month with no appointment made as yet.

"The new committee will be involved in replacing Mark, and there will be a new regime in here at the club which probably isn't that bad," Ellis said.

"The club is in a pretty good position at the moment. We had good turnover on Sunday, trainers come from all over the place to race here, the track is looking great and we have more than 100 horses being trained on course."

With its cup meeting over for another year the next major event on the Dubbo racing calendar is Derby Day, which will be held on Saturday, November 1.

Thousands of racegoers are expected to flock to the track for the meeting, which is dubbed as being Dubbo's biggest social event.
