The Far West Academy of Sport (FWAS) is looking set to embark on a busy couple of months ahead with the rugby league, netball and Lone Star programs all set to begin during the months of October and November.
It all kicked off this past weekend with the rugby league program conducting its first of many regular local training sessions in the satellite centres of Gilgandra and Nyngan. Regular local training sessions will also be run as part of the newly-structured FWAS Rugby League program in the soon to be established satellite centres of Bourke, Brewarrina, Broken Hill and Collarenebri.
“We are looking for all talented rugby league players between 14 and 17 years from across the Far West Region to attend their nearest satellite centre location,” FWAS programs and development officer Jarrad Linton Harland said.
“We are looking to make selections and finalise our satellite squad after the second training session so if you missed the first session you can still attend the second and be considered for selection”
The academy will also be holding netball trials in Broken Hill and Warren on Sunday October 19 for the upcoming 2014-15 FWAS Netball Program.
The trials are open to all players in the Far West region turning 13 to 16 years in 2015 (born in 1999 – 2002).
For the first time the academy will introduce an east and west concept where the academy will select an east squad from the trialling athletes in Warren and a west squad from the Broken Hill trials with approximately 40 players in total being offered a scholarship.
Selected players will receive regular high-level coaching aimed at preparing athletes for regional and representative honours.
The program is supported by Netball NSW and focuses on further developing the athletes’ core skills as well as enabling them to train and play at a higher intensity.
“It’s important that athletes understand that they are only required to attend the closest trial to them.”
Applications are also currently open for the 2014-15 FWAS Lone Star Program with applications set to close on Friday October 31 2014.
The FWAS Lone Star Program is open to all athletes aged 13 to 18 years in 2015 (Born in 1997– 2002) that participate in a sport recognised by the Australian Sports Commission but fall outside of our squad based programs (rugby league, netball, football, tennis and golf).
The Lone Star Program is a scholarship-based program that aims to provide financial assistance and support to talented athletes in the Far West region that fall outside of our squad-based programs to enhance their opportunity of competing at a higher level in their chosen sport. To obtain more information about or to get an application package for any of the FWAS programs please don’t hesitate to contact the academy on (02) 6847 3638.
