To get to the grand final Nyngan High School had played a number of games.
It began on May 6 in Dubbo with a gala day. Nyngan defeated Oberon 16-10 after having played against St Matthews and Gulargambone/Baradine.
They then travelled to Coonabarabran on July 23 to play against Guyra/Uralla.
Nyngan won 34-30 going through to the grand final.
Our talented team was ready for the challenge that was in front of us.
Nyngan High School started strongly with a superb try in the corner to Toby Smith set up by the skilful Sonny Knight.
As was the case for most of the match, every time we scored a try the strong Tumut side responded instantly with a try.
Col Piper scored a great individual try with some light stepping that bamboozled the opposition and gave goal kicker Bill Quarmby his easiest conversion of the day.
Another couple of tries from Tumut and a barnstorming try by Bill meant the evenly matched teams went to the half-time break level at 14-14.
The second half saw a similar pattern of tries with Kyle Hall stamping his class on the game scoring two quick tries from dummy half.
With minutes to go it looked like Toby had sealed the win with a determined try out wide giving our school the lead 28-26.
Unfortunately, Tumut’s man-of-the-match centre careered over next to the posts and it looked over at 32-28.
We had six tackles to create history. Determined charges by Dylan Venter, Cale Dunn and Malik Chatfield had the crowd on their seats.
We threw everything at the strong Tumut side and it looked like we had scored the winning try only for the referee to call it back for a forward pass.
Full-time score 32-28 to the Tumut side.
Nyngan High School is extremely proud of the boys and they can be mighty proud of the way they played.
Our forward pack of Malik Chatfield, Dylan Ventor, Kyle Hall, Sonny Knight, Bill Quarmby, Roy Carlton and Toby Smith really took it to the opposition all game with some good defence and solid runs down the middle.
The backs were able to capitalise with space out wide to show their pace and skilful running. Col Piper, Cale Dunn, Jack Stanford, Kane Nankervis, Cameron Ryan and Tyler Martin all tried hard to cut through the strong Tumut defence and really had the opposition on the back foot for much of the game.
Congratulations to Nyngan High School teacher Tristan Dal Forno for his work with the team and to Brendan Smith and Alistair Quarmby for their coaching and support. Nyngan High School is very proud of the Under 13’s football team and their tremendous effort and sportsmanship.
We are equally proud and appreciative of the excellent support and encouragement the community of Nyngan displays for our students in their sporting endeavours.
