Tullamore-based racer Troy Carey’s third consecutive visit to the Northern Territory can only be described as overwhelmingly successful.

Carey closed his campaign by taking overall top honours in the 2018 Top End Wingless Sprint Challenge at Darwin’s Northline Speedway.
A model of consistency throughout the 10 nights of racing, which consisted of 11 feature races, incorporating five doubleheaders that include a twin feature race to make up the Top End Challenge, Carey visited the feature-race podium on nine different occasions, giving him an impressive top-three percentage of 81 per cent and a top-five percentage of 91 per cent.

Racking up a total of three feature-race wins aboard his NSW number 45 Regional Insurance Services / Tullamore Hotel supported Eagle car, the first of which saw him achieve a clean sweep, along with five runner-up finishes, Carey’s campaign was also highlighted by his performance in the Darwin Title, where he traded the lead back and forth with good friend and fellow NSW-based racer Nathan Dicker before coming home in second.
While Carey looked likely to achieve a successful NT Title defence following a convincing victory in the preliminary feature race on night one, a slight miss in car setup meant that he was forced to settle for third place.
“It would have been great to be able to pick up back-to-back NT Titles, but our trip overall was really consistent, which is very rewarding in such a competitive class,” Carey commented.
“The Top End Challenge is a fantastic concept and it’s a great way to prepare for the upcoming season down south. Apart from the racing, the hospitality from everyone in Darwin is the reason my team and I keep coming back every year.”
As opposed to chasing the NSW Club Championship in the upcoming 2018-19 season, Carey will be setting his sights on contesting a multitude of title events, including the NSW, Victorian, South Australian, and Queensland Titles, as well as the Australian Championship at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway in Victoria, with plans to travel to Warrnambool for a shakedown run prior to the Championship event, contesting the third Summer Slam Series round.
“I’m very much looking forward to getting the new season underway, particularly off the back of our recent run in the Northern Territory,” he added.
“It’s going to be very important to get some experience at Premier Speedway prior to the Australian Championship, which will no doubt attract the country’s best drivers. We want to focus on contesting as many titles and blue-ribbon events as possible this season and hopefully we can be amongst the front runners.”
